What is search engine optimization anyway?

Search engine optimization (aka SEO) is the practice of creating web pages that are put together in a way so that they are, in a nutshell, search engine food. Or at the very least, compliant with the search engines. There is a long list of SEO tactics, some good some bad, that SEO providers use to achieve the ultimate goal of a top 10 listing in Google / Yahoo / MSN, etc. The end point being tons of free (organic) search engine traffic. Google alone accounts for around 80-90% of all searching done on the internet. If your site is not indexed properly the chances of your site succeeding are slim to none. That said, search engine optimization is easily the most important aspect of designing a web site. Obviously, I'm in the business of selling web sites and web services, so place the label "biased" on me if you must.
